Roads made for riding

Cycling training camps in Girona

Begin

No. I  ·  An invitation from Volt Experience

We want to take you somewhere we believe in.

For years, Volt has brought athletes from all over the world to ride the roads the professionals ride. This is a private edition for a small group. We are André and Tayne, we live and train here, and we shaped this week the way we would shape it for our own friends.

Why Girona, and not Mallorca?

The roads: excellent asphalt, calm traffic, drivers used to cyclists. The company: in few places is it so normal to share a climb with an Olympic champion. The city: here sport is part of daily life, in the cafes, the shops, the everyday conversations.

After you train here, the answer stops being an explanation. It becomes an experience.

No. II  ·  The place

Girona

Why the best cyclists in the world chose this town

Girona sits in Catalonia, between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, and has become one of the world's leading centres of endurance sport.

It all started with cycling. Today, hundreds of professional athletes live and train in the region, drawn by safe, well-paved roads and an enormous variety of routes linking the coast to the mountains in a few hours.

Some of the biggest names in the sport built their lives here. David Millar, Dan Martin and Ryder Hesjedal all made Girona home, and the tradition continues: ride out on any weekday morning and you will pass professionals doing their own training.

The riding has a range few places can match. Quiet lanes through the wheat fields of the Empordà, long forest climbs like Sant Hilari, the coastal road of 365 bends above the Mediterranean, and Rocacorba, where the pros go to test their legs.

But Girona goes beyond training. Between one session and the next, the city offers a medieval old quarter, cafes full of athletes, excellent restaurants and a culture that makes sport part of everyday life.

You come for the riding. You remember the rest.

No. III  ·  The people

Who is taking you there.

Your hosts in Girona

André & Tayne

André is a cyclist racing Spain's elite calendar. He moved to Girona and stayed. He has ridden more than 50,000 kilometres across Catalonia, and he knows every climb, every cafe stop, and every place the wind turns. He rides at the front, with a professional's eye on everyone behind him.

Tayne is a triathlete and trains on the same roads you will come to know during the week. She is the one who looks after the whole experience, in and out of training: from the snacks on the rides to the best cafes, restaurants and specialist shops, along with the local tips, the logistics, and everything that makes the week flow smoothly.

No. IV  ·  The idea

More than a week of training.

A training camp should feel like the best week of your season, not the hardest. Every ride is guided, with a support car behind the group, and the routes are chosen by people who ride these roads all year.

You do not need to be a high-performance athlete. Everyone rides at their own level, and nobody is dropped.

This is how the week unfolds.

No. V  ·  The week

Eight days, seven nights, six rides.

Every ride at your own pace, with a support car behind the group

What follows is the shape of the week: six days of riding, from the sea to the mountains, with the easy day placed exactly where the legs want it.

Hotel Ciutat de Girona, home for the week

Day one

Arrival

The first day is for landing softly. Check in at the hotel in the old quarter, build or collect your bike, and ease into the rhythm of the week. In the evening we gather for a welcome dinner, meet the group and the Volt team, and walk through what lies ahead. No alarm, no pressure, just the easy anticipation of a good week about to begin.

Day two

The Hincapie loop

The week opens with a Girona classic: the Hincapie loop, the rolling circuit named after the American pro who made this town his home. It is the perfect first ride, enough to wake the legs without emptying them. Back in town, the afternoon is yours: a slow coffee, a walk through the old quarter, the first easy hours of a week that belongs to the bike.

Day three

Coastal loop to Tossa de Mar

The classic big day out to the sea and back. The reward is the coastal road of 365 bends, tracing the Costa Brava between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Tossa de Mar: roughly 22 kilometres of red-rock cliffs, turquoise coves, and one beautiful corner after another, finishing at the medieval walled town of Tossa. Chagall painted here and called it the Blue Paradise. You will understand why.

Day four

Rocacorba

Rocacorba is the one every rider in town talks about, the climb the pros use to read their form before the big races. There is no clock to beat: you climb at your own pace, the van meets you partway if you want it, and a proper brunch waits at the top. The way home rolls past Lake Banyoles, the 1992 Olympic rowing venue, and back to Girona along the quiet roads of the Empordà.

Day five

The Sant Gregori coffee ride

Mid-week asks for a lighter touch. An easy spin through the Vall de Llemena, on roads so full of cyclists that local drivers are famously patient, with a long stop at the cafes the riders themselves own, La Fabrica among them. The sports massage lands in the afternoon, exactly when you need it most. It is how the professionals carry a big week: easy on purpose.

Day six · The queen stage

Sant Hilari, through silent forest.

The biggest day of the week, built around one of Girona's classics: a long, gentle climb to Sant Hilari Sacalm, winding through forest so still you can hear your own breathing.

Day seven

Golden hour in the Empordà

The last full day saves the bike for the best light. At golden hour you roll out into the Empordà, where the road threads through wheat fields and medieval villages: Peratallada, which National Geographic named one of the most photogenic villages in the world, the hilltop walls of Pals, a coffee in the cobbled square of Monells, the low sun turning the plain to gold. It is the ride you will be describing to people for years.

Day eight

Departure

A calm final morning. Time to pack without rushing, take a last walk across the river, and have a final coffee in the square where the week began. You leave with strong legs, a head full of roads, and a clearer sense of what your body told you all week.

Every route flexes with the weather and the level of the group, because a good week bends to suit the riders.
